I have a dog like some of you who is afflicted with cancer…OS. He is sadly dying of this horrible cancer. I fight the fight just like all of you and wish for a miracle everyday. I like many of you have spent thousands of dollars to fight this disease.
I read all the posts on the dog bone cancer groups and the artemesin and cancer group and am overwhelmed at how many of us have had more than one 4 legged friend die of cancer. This leads me to ask WHY ARE ALL OUR DOGS DYING OF CANCER?
I have my dog on so many herbs and pain meds and arte in the hopes of fixing this thing just like all of you! I have succeeded at keeping the ultimate loss for my Louie for over a year. But s I sit here writing this I think all of us need to raise up a very loud voice to all the Vets treating our friends, all the Vet foundations, all the techs, all the dog food makers and get some answers. I read the other day that 8000 dogs are diagnosed with cancer each day. Every day, almost 4200 people are diagnosed with cancer in the United States.
We are a strong group fighting a fight that is consuming every living being and I so wished all of us could somehow become a loud voice and rattle the halls of the govt. until they take all that money they waste and put it to the research on cancer and holistic intervention.
My grief and diligence in fighting cancer for Louie has raised the levels of my voice so what say you….how can we be heard on this terrible disease and find the WHY?
I don’t want one more dog or cat or person to suffer without a fight!
Totally agree because possibly if we find more specific reasons in either species then both can be prevented or at least fought before it gets too far.
Since starting this journey in January I, too, have been so shocked by just the number of new diagnoses on this web site and know that doesn’t even touch the surface. We come from all walks of life so it is hard to point a finger at environment. It would be interesting to find out if cancer rates have ever been studied in the wolves here in Yellowstone or anywhere else.
So many diseases need cures yet research dollars are dwindling so the funds can go elsewhere to less important things.
HIP.. HIP.. HOORAY:-) 🙂 Thank you Louie and Jill…well said!
Congratulations on your boy Louie still blowing the horn of hope! He’s a beautiful boy!
Yeah, when I was little growing up, our dogs ate pretty much the same food we did, supplemented with a little dog food. Plates were scraped into their bowls at the end of the meal and’ most of the time that was an ample amount. Our childhood forever dogs lived 15 or 16 years plus and seemed to just succumb to old age.
Guess they got an occasional rabi es shot’s no heartworm piles or tick medicine.
All my dogs as an adult have bee given the Better quality” food….very, very few vaccines, etc.—-basically just puppy stuff ( very fortunate live in rural area—anyway, won’t really get I to how I’ve gotten around avoiding all those rabies shots) and they DRI k well water…..and solo many have had some form of cancer….two with spleen …maybe even three….two with bone cancer…one with lung cancer…..and all are mutts (aka PURE BRED HEARTS) except two Bull Mastiffs…one had a nose cancer (made it to 12yrs. Old though YAY Twinkie:-) And now my Happy Hannah has the bone cancer.
So what the heck is going on??
Thanks for your post and the very best to your Louie:-) Maybe this will be the start of a grass roots movement:-)
Thanks again, Sally and Happy Hanah
Ohhh I know what you mean and can relate completely. When cancer hits home all of a sudden we are hyper aware of just how prevalent it really is.
I recently asked Dr. Ann Hohenhaus on our Tripawd Talk Radio episode about this. She says that 1) yes she believes there is more cancer but 2) that we never had any real data on cancer in pets until very recently in history. Prior to that, cancer was still there, but we just weren’t tracking it because we didn’t treat animals with the care we do now. Progress is slow but it is happening.
Another cause for hope; medical professionals both in human and veterinary medicine now understand the connection between how cancer affects our pets and how it affects humans. Hundreds of comparitive oncology studies are being done to pinpoint how cancer begins, and of course how to stop it.
We have a long way to go but progress is being made.Groups like Morris Animal Foundation, the oldest animal health organizations in the world, are leading the way, so the more we can support them the faster an end is in sight.
{{{{{{hugs}}}}} Give Louie an extra one from all of us!
Hi All,
Louie is doing well this morning. I am so glad to see some people speaking up about this health problem. Personally, the problem is two-fold, 1. Too many animals are contracting cancer and statistics say that number is climbing 2. Treatments for cancer suck, they do NOT work and we as the patients and people paying for the treatment should insist that the oncologists NOT use expensive treatments that DO NOT work. Dozing an animal with chemo does not kill the cancer, more times than not it kills the patient by destroying the immune system. This is like trying to fix a broken radiator hose by breaking the radiator! The immune system is so compromised by chemo the animal has to fight twice as hard.
I have looked at the Morris Foundation with its 63 million dollars in assets much of them hedge funds and its 7 and half million dollars in animal research investment last year? Why isn’t every dollar possible going into research? Why 63 million dollars in assets? People donate to these foundations for research not off shore in annuity funds.
I will say it again: It’s time to force the Vets who charge $50 a visit, and in Louie’s case, $5000 to amputate his leg to relieve the pain to change how they treat our animals.
Cancer is big business. When I pulled into the parking lot of the City of Angels Cancer Unit for Animals in LA, the employee section was packed with BMWs and Mercedes. I have a friend who is a radiologist and works with breast cancer patients and she says if they find a cure for cancer then the billion dollar industry of cancer care loses and no one wants that especially the BMW owners.
We are a huge group of people suffering everyday with losing our 4 legged friends to cancer. We have a loud voice and it is time to open our minds and our mouths and demand answers!
Debby
WOW Debby, I applaud your passion and commitment to making a difference.
When you get a second, do you mind passing on some of the holistic treatments you’ve been giving Louie?? Something is working you’re doing!
Wishing you the very best. Remember, Louie is “living”. It only takes a second d to “die”….and up u til that point, every living soul still has a purpose.
Now go hug that cuddle bear of a dog!
Thanks for all your input.
